Plywood is a popular type of engineered timber, produced through a specialist manufacturing technique called ‘cross-graining’. This production method involves gluing multiple layers of compressed wood veneer (piles) which are rotated 90 degrees each time so that the grains are crossed.
This practice ensures optimal structural strength for the timber whilst minimising the risk of warping and splitting as the sheets are nailed, tacked or screwed.
There are multiple types of plywood sheeting available, each uniquely suited to different applications. Structural plywood for example is ideal for a range of building and construction installations such as beams, hoardings, wall and roof bracing, boat-building and more.
This form of plywood must be CE marked to show that the timber fully conforms to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). Non-structural plywood, also known as interior plywood, is typically installed for aesthetic use on ceilings, wall linings, architecture and furniture.
