Whether your radiators are simply looking a little tired or have taken a hit whilst moving some furniture, radiator paint could be the answer to all your problems. But whilst you may have bought other interior paints before, radiator paint may prove a little daunting.

Thankfully, buying paint for radiators can be made far easier with a little knowledge. From picking the right brands to understanding the prep required, here are a few things you’ll need to know before buying your radiator paint.

You Can’t Use Any Paint

Unfortunately, you can’t use any paint to revive your old radiators. This is as wall paint or even other metal paints could emit harmful fumes when heated. That’s why radiator paint has been specially formulated to not only adhere well to metal surfaces but also withstand high temperatures.

Pick Your Colour Wisely

Did you know that the colour of paint used could impact the level of heat your radiators emit? That’s because whilst white paint will suit most interiors, darker colours will see your radiator emit more heat.

Not All Radiators Are Paintable

Some manufacturers recommend against painting their radiators due to their impact on heat efficiency and safety. What’s more, painting your radiator will almost certainly void any warranty you may have. Be sure to consider this if you’re still within your radiator's warranty.

Always Sand Your Radiator

When it comes to painting your radiator, ensure you sand the old paint with 120-grade sandpaper. This will help you achieve a more professional finish with it removing any flaky paint or imperfections in previously applied coatings.

Pick a Proven Brand

Whilst paint from unknown brands will save you a buck in the short term, they’ll leave your radiator looking tired in the long term. We recommend using a trusted brand of radiator paint, such as Rustins, Hammerite, and Ronseal.

With your newfound knowledge, you’re now able to buy your radiator paint. But if you still need a little help, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.
