Which Type of Screw is Right for Your Project?

Screws are created from a variety of materials, with different, heads, thread types, and other characteristics that, depending on your unique requirements, can make or break your project. Each different type of screw is manufactured with a specific use/material in mind, so it is important to take the time and consider the below factors:

  • Finish: Screws are manufactured to different standards, for different environments and to offer different degrees of durability
  • Application: The length and size of your screw will largely determine its effectiveness in any application
  • Safety: If your screws are responsible for holding up shelves, bookcases, or other heavy objects, take care to ensure they are strong enough

How Do Screws Work?

Each part of the screw works towards fastening your desired materials together, but you can get screws with different head shapes, drives and threads that serve different benefits. Screw thread, tip, and head all vary for different uses; if you understand what these differences indicate, you'll be able to correctly choose the screws you need.

The screw you're choosing must be the correct size for the material and application. Screws should not be excessively lengthy, since this may result in the screw penetrating the material.

Screws that are excessively short should also be avoided since they may weaken the fastening. Finally, the diameter of the screw should be examined, since thicker screws may fracture more delicate materials, whilst thinner, smaller screws may be twisted out of shape by more heavy-duty components.

How to Safely Insert Screws

  1. Choose your screw
  2. Ensure you are choosing the right screwdriver for the job
  3. Fix your components in position
  4. Mark where you intend to screw
  5. Pre-drill if you need to
  6. Use a screwdriver to secure it

How to Safely Remove Screws

  1. Ensure you are choosing the right screwdriver for the job
  2. Twist the screw anti-clockwise
  3. Fix your components in position
  4. You should be able to take the screw out by hand once it has been loosened
  5. Bear in mind that removing screws may result in unstable components

How to Safely Rusty Screws

  1. Hit the screw's head with a hammer to dislodge the rust. Afterwards, add a lubricant or rust penetrant, and try to remove the screw immediately
  2. Apply concentrated heat to the screw head to expand it, then immediately cool it with water to compress it, breaking the rust's connection and enabling it to fracture away. It may take several tries to complete, and heat should be used only if the material enclosing the screw, is non-flammable
