Bifold internal doors are terrific additions to wide walls and rooms. Having been a staple in many homes for the last half century or more, they are excellent ways to add value to a home thanks to their striking visual appeal. They can also provide ambience and save you space by folding in on one another as opposed to opening out.
The doors work on a concertina principle. This means they are constructed in the form of multiple hinged panels that fold back into a compact storage area which is fairly small in the corner of your room. The result is a wide, open doorway with little space taken up by the door itself. Some variations of the bifold door model have ‘traffic doors’ that take the form of standard swing doors that are built into the bifold panels, creating easy access between rooms without the need to open up the entire sliding door.
Note that a bifold door is not to be confused with a sliding door. These doors are often thought of as the same, but the difference is that sliding doors do not fold – they slide back over each other. Meanwhile, bifold doors feature runners that slide through guide pieces, keeping the panels themselves aligned and uniform.
